I put my faith and trust in Jesus Christ and the work which He completed on the cross of Calvary at the age of seventeen. I had gone from church to church as a young person and had come to the conclusion  that all churches were hypocritical. They seemed to me, at that age, that churches preached one thing and believed another. Therefore because of this I had decided to skip the church thing! My mother had found a small church in Liberal Kansas that seemed to her to be the real thing and begged me to attend one more time. There I found a church that preached the Bible and lived by the Bible. I began to learn more about the Word of God and about who God really was.

In a few years I was married to LaVerne Burkholder. As a young couple we attended and took part in our church. I taught various Sunday School classes from first grade boys to young adults. At the age of twenty-one I accepted the call to pastor Fellowship Baptist Church in Spearman, Texas. In about two and a half or three years God impressed me with the lack of churches in the Northwest. This conviction led me to Coos Bay, Oregon. This is where I spent the next forty-two years.

I accepted the pastorate of Harvest Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas in March of 2010.  So as you can see for now over fifty years I have pastored and taught the Word of God. Our emphasis at Harvest is still the Word of God. Each service the Word is taught or preached. We believe that if we as a people would go back to the teaching of this book there would be much more happiness and success each of our lives. We would love to have you visit Harvest Baptist Church, meet its friendly and outgoing people and enjoy the blessing of seeing a church that God has blessed.

Derek was born and raised in North Bend, OR. Because of God’s marvelous grace, he has grown up in fundamental, Baptist churches and was saved at the age of 12. An accomplished student, Derek graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in June of 2014. While he had plans to enter the work world in sales and marketing, God had different plans. At the beginning of his senior year at SOU, God began working on his heart about entering the ministry as a pastor. The day after his graduation he surrendered to God’s will.

Since joining Harvest Baptist in July, Derek currently serves as the Youth Pastor and song leader. God has placed a burden on his heart for young people as he knows the struggles they face daily in this ungodly world. Derek’s goals are to grow a strong youth group, not only in numbers, but in spiritual wisdom, understanding, and discernment.

Verse of the Day

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. — Psalm 43:5 (KJV)
